About me

Diana Roberts

As a child and teenager I sailed on the Brisbane River and around Moreton Bay.

I grew up with ships and visited them with a father who was Chaplin to the Mission to Seaman – and always asked to visit the engine room. The interest, begun in childhood has never gone away and I still sail as often as I can. Trips include many hours in the Solent and beyond, the Irish Sea the Channel , the Baltic and one trans-Atlantic crossing and I still love engine rooms.

While studying for my BA in English and History I did various jobs to make ends meet.

Travelled to the UK 1n 1977 and in 1979 was accepted by CH Fox and Sons as an apprentice and enrolled on the 12month training course at Oulton Broad (now International Boatbuilding Training Centre). The course covered all vessel types and materials and the day release City and Guilds backed the practical course with appropriate theory as well as lessons in welding.

As CH fox and Sons were sold out I had no assured work. I eventually found work with a narrow boat restoration trust. Here I learnt about wood and wooden boats. Everything from sawing planks to making nails. It also involved work on fitouts where I worked alongside steel fabricators and engineers.

This led on to full time work at Fiddlers Ferry Boatyard where work covered new builds, repairs and renovations to vessels of all types and all materials.

In 1992, having passed with distinction the foundation year, I was accepted onto the BSc [upgraded a year later to B Eng (Hons)] degree course in Yacht and Power Craft Design at the Southampton Institute of Higher Education and graduated in 1995 with a 2.2.

On graduating I was employed by the BMF to work on their RCD Management system and also took up several design contracts.

I eventually set up my own business where I can bring to my work all the knowledge and skills I acquired as a l boat builder and all the knowledge and information acquired through my degree design and advisory work.
