Marine surveys form the bulk of the work I do. A marine survey is an essential part of the boat purchasing process and many insurers now require a marine survey before offering cover.
I bring to my surveys the experience gained from my training as and my ten years working as a boat builder. In this capacity I was involved in the repair and refits of a range of craft from large yachts to small power boats. I was also employed on new builds in GRP, steel and wood.
Going on from this I gained degree a B. Eng (Hons.) in Yacht and Powercraft Design from Southampton Institute. As result I am also able to offer Naval Architectural services. These have been principally stability assessments and reports for both MCA Code and RCD compliance. Other work has involved measuring hulls and producing lines plans, design, design drawings and basic structural assessments.
When the BMF took me on to work on their RCD Management system as the Directive came into force I soon began to learn about the requirements and obligations for boatbuilders and have continued to build on that knowledge and understanding. As an RCD advisor I have seen a lot of misinformation a so my first priority is to ensure that my clients receive clear and uncomplicated advice.
As a keen sailor I sail as often as possible and am a volunteer mate with OYT South. Most of my sailing has been on the south coast and English Channel with several voyages in Scotland, Irish Sea and off the east coast. I have made several trips in the Baltic and one trans-Atlantic crossing.
